LIVE STREAM AWARD CEREMONY

ASTRONOMY PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR GOES GLOBAL

ROYAL OBSERVATORY GREENWICH

The Challenge

In its twelfth year, the Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year Awards, hosted by the Royal Observatory Greenwich, showcases the best photography of Space.

Due to COVID restrictions, the team turned to us to take the event online for the first time. Attracting over 5,000 entries from 6 continents, we were tasked with delivering an engaging live broadcast which showcased the breath-taking entries of all nominees and winners.

Our Response

Whilst the current situation meant that we could not bring guests together physically, we were keen to create a dynamic and interesting live broadcast. The grandeur and international importance of the Royal Observatory was a perfect location for the studio shoot, and we selected the foot of the Great Equatorial Telescope as the key location for the live broadcast.

With social distancing and safe working practices at the heart of all designs, our digital team installed a temporary control hub onsite. This enabled us to mix multiple live camera feeds with pre-recorded content and graphics to create the engaging hour-long broadcast.

The Experience

Judges Jon Culshaw and Dr Emily Drabek-Maunder presented the show, which was broadcast to Facebook and YouTube.

Our onsite producers choregraphed a smooth and seamless live broadcast and amongst the live segments, our moving image team created a series of engaging graphics to showcase the nominated photos and the winners. In the last section of the show, Jon and Emily interacted with the online audience, by answering questions that were submitted during the broadcast.

Utilising the power of an online solution, the audience for this year’s event was the highest in the events history, with over 14,000 viewers tuning in from around the world.

The show culminated in the crowning of the winning Astrophotographer, Nicolas Lefaudeux after his image of the Andromeda Galaxy was announced the top astrophoto in the annual competition.
